A Special Event For Friends 12.30pm Friday February 10th at mima

Many of you will have seen the current mima exhibition, What Friends have done for Middlesbrough, which charts the amazing work of the friends of Middlesbrough Art Gallery, started by Lady Crathorne, through its archives and acquisitions purchased for the gallery in the 1950s and 60s. The exhibition has been sponsored by mimafriends as part of the fifth birthday celebrations and, though we say it ourselves, has received a lot of praise from visitors far and wide. Much of the interesting story of this time is told through letters and other documents which from part of the archival material of the Crathorne family.

As a special event for mimafriends Lord Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, has offered to give a short introduction to the show followed by a talk through the exhibits from curator James Beighton, who researched the archives and organised the work on display. This is a great opportunity for mimafriends to get together over a glass of wine and enjoy a fascinating insight into our second sponsored exhibition.

Do come along and support your event!

Track Across Time

mima friends are cordially invited to the launch of Track Across Time, an exhibition of new work by Cluster Arts in conjunction with the National Railway Museum at Locomotion, Shildon.

The five northeast artists involved were asked to make work in response to Shildon's unique role in the history of railways.  Tish Bloom, Carolyn Corfield, Vera Hynes and Michael Kusz, collectively known as Cluster Arts, work in various media: sculpture, ceramics, painting and film. On occasion a guest artist joins them, in this case photographer Graeme Rowatt. Interspersed with the Museum's magnificent permanent and visiting exhibits their original pieces aim to add to the visitor experience by delivering an evocative journey through the artists' imaginations.

The launch, which takes place on Saturday January 14th, 12 noon - 2.30 p.m., takes place in the Collection Building, accessed through Dale Road Industrial Estate.  Weather permitting, it will include a complimentary 'loco' trip and privileged access to some of the nation's railway icons.  Confirmation of your attendance is necessary so if you intend to come, please email Pam Porter, Events Officer at Locomotion pam.porter@nrm.org.ukor telephone 01388 771439 as soon as possible, stating you are a mima friend.
