mima friends is a registered charity that supports the development and promotion of mima. As a mima friend you will have unique access to mima and you will be the first to know what is happening at the gallery. As well as enriching their enjoyment of the arts, mima friends also have the opportunity, if they wish, to actively support the gallery.

Can you help us with our visitor surveys?
Dear mima Friends
mima is now carrying out a three year programme of exit surveys to our visitors, to find out more about them and their experience of the gallery.
In order to ensure we get enough surveys we really need your help. If any of the mima Friends would be willing to come in and volunteer for a few hours a week to carry out a few surveys for us and support our very busy gallery assistants, we would be delighted to welcome you. It's also a great way to engage with our visitors more and find out what they think, what we are doing well and what we can do to improve our offer.
If you are interested in getting involved or just finding out more contact Kim Gowland Tel 07725269069 Email k_gowland@middlesbrough.gov.uk
mimas Fifth Birthday
mima's 5th
birthday celebrations went with a bang last Saturday. mimafriends were
engaged in meeting and greeting throngs of excited young children (and
their parents) with stickers and balloons, birthday cake and giant
cookies. The noise levels were nearly explosive as kids jostled to
decorate fairy cakes and queued the length of mima's atrium to have
their faces painted. The atmosphere was joyful, exciting and vibrant.
The mima staff and mimafriends volunteers were thrilled with the
turnout which, in itself, demonstrates the positive role mima now plays
within the community. Visitors of all ages swarmed the galleries as the
steel band kept things bouncing in the atrium. The Friends extend a
special thankyou to Amy, our departing administrator-volunteer, and
Sarra who bravely turned up on the day to help out.
Another Friend, Meena, suggesting resuming our social coffee
mornings. These seem to have petered out due to poor uptake but we've
recently been kindly donated lots of coffee and specialist beverages by
Ringtons so perhaps we should try again. If anyone is interested in a
regular get-together, let us know and we'll set up a date for you to
meet up and Meena can take it from there!

A Special Event For Friends 12.30pm Friday February 10th at mima
Many
of you will have seen the current mima exhibition, What Friends have done for Middlesbrough, which charts the amazing
work of the friends of Middlesbrough Art Gallery, started by Lady Crathorne,
through its archives and acquisitions purchased for the gallery in the 1950s
and 60s. The exhibition has been sponsored by mimafriends as part of the fifth birthday celebrations and, though
we say it ourselves, has received a lot of praise from visitors far and wide.
Much of the interesting story of this time is told through letters and other
documents which from part of the archival material of the Crathorne family.
As
a special event for mimafriends Lord
Crathorne, Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, has offered to give a short
introduction to the show followed by a talk through the exhibits from curator
James Beighton, who researched the archives and organised the work on display.
This is a great opportunity for mimafriends
to get together over a glass of wine and enjoy a fascinating insight into our
second sponsored exhibition.
